How to Repair a Kitchen Cabinet Door

Kitchen cabinet doors get a lot of use, so it's no surprise that they can sometimes become damaged. Whether it's a loose hinge, a broken handle, or a scratched surface, there are a few simple repairs that you can make yourself to get your cabinet door looking and functioning like new again.

Inspect the Damage

The first step is to inspect the damage and determine what needs to be repaired. Is the door loose, or is it the hinge that needs to be tightened? Is the handle broken, or is it just the screws that need to be tightened? Once you know what needs to be fixed, you can gather the necessary tools and materials.

Tighten the Hinges

If the cabinet door is loose, the first thing to check is the hinges. Over time, the screws can become loose, causing the door to sag or come off its hinges completely. To tighten the hinges, simply use a screwdriver to tighten the screws. Be careful not to overtighten the screws, as this can damage the hinges.

Replace the Handle

If the handle on your cabinet door is broken, you will need to replace it. To do this, first remove the old handle by unscrewing the screws that hold it in place. Then, line up the new handle with the holes in the door and screw it into place. Be sure to tighten the screws securely so that the handle does not come loose.

Repair a Scratch

If the surface of your cabinet door is scratched, you can repair it by using a furniture repair kit. These kits typically come with a filler stick and a touch-up pen. To use the kit, first clean the scratched area with a damp cloth. Then, apply the filler stick to the scratch and let it dry. Once the filler is dry, use the touch-up pen to color in the scratched area. Allow the touch-up pen to dry completely before using the door.

Refinish the Door

If the surface of your cabinet door is badly damaged, you may need to refinish it. To do this, you will need to remove the door from its hinges and sand it down. Once the door is sanded, you can apply a new coat of paint or stain. Allow the paint or stain to dry completely before reattaching the door to its hinges.
