How to Put Down Laminate Flooring in Kitchen

Laminate flooring is a popular choice for kitchens due to its durability, affordability, and ease of installation. However, there are several essential aspects to consider when putting down laminate flooring in a kitchen to ensure a successful and long-lasting installation.

Planning the Installation

Before beginning the installation, it's crucial to plan the layout and determine the necessary materials. Measure the kitchen to calculate the amount of flooring needed and consider the direction of the planks. Plan out the placement of appliances and fixtures to avoid cutting around them after installation.

Preparing the Subfloor

The subfloor must be smooth, level, and free of moisture. Remove any existing flooring and underlayment, and level any uneven areas using self-leveling compound. Ensure the subfloor is dry and clean before installing the underlayment.

Installing the Underlayment

The underlayment provides a cushioning layer between the subfloor and the laminate flooring. It helps reduce noise, insulate the floor, and protect the planks from moisture. Roll out the underlayment perpendicular to the direction of the planks and use tape to secure the seams.

Laying the First Row

Start by laying the first row of planks along the longest wall. Use spacers to ensure even spacing between the planks and against the walls. Cut the planks to fit the perimeter as needed.

Locking the Planks

Laminate planks have interlocking edges that allow them to be snapped together. Start by aligning the tongue of one plank with the groove of the adjacent plank and locking them together. Continue this process for the entire row.

Staggering the Joints

To enhance the durability and appearance of the flooring, stagger the joints between the planks in different rows. This prevents unsightly seams and reduces the risk of buckling.

Trimming and Fitting

The final step is to install baseboards, quarter rounds, or other moldings to cover the expansion gap around the perimeter and give the flooring a finished look. Secure the moldings using nails or adhesive.
