How to Install Shoe Molding Under Kitchen Cabinets
Shoe molding, also known as toe kick molding, is a versatile and functional trim that adds both style and protection to the base of your kitchen cabinets. Installing shoe molding under kitchen cabinets is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few hours with the right tools and materials.
Materials You'll Need:
- Shoe molding
- Caulk
- Caulk gun
- Mitre saw
- Nail gun
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Pencil
Step 1: Measure and Cut the Shoe Molding
Measure the length of the area where you want to install the shoe molding. Cut the molding to fit using a mitre saw. If you need to make angled cuts for corners, set the mitre saw accordingly.
Step 2: Apply Caulk to the Back of the Molding
Apply a bead of caulk to the back of the molding, where it will meet the floor. This will help to seal any gaps and prevent moisture from getting in.
Step 3: Position the Molding
Position the molding under the kitchen cabinets, aligning it with the bottom edge. Use a level to ensure that the molding is level and flush with the floor.
Step 4: Nail the Molding in Place
Use a nail gun to nail the molding in place. Space the nails about 6-8 inches apart. countersink the nails slightly below the surface of the molding using a nail set.
Step 5: Caulk and Finish
Apply a bead of caulk around the edges of the molding, where it meets the cabinets and the floor. Smooth out the caulk with your finger or a caulk tool. Allow the caulk to dry completely before using the area.
Tips:
- Use a moisture-resistant shoe molding for areas that are prone to moisture, such as under sinks or in bathrooms.
- If you don't have a mitre saw, you can use a hand saw and mitre box to cut the molding.
- Make sure to wear safety glasses and gloves when using power tools.
- Allow the caulk to dry completely before walking or placing objects on the molding.
