Installing Laminate Flooring Around Kitchen Cabinets: A Step-by-Step Guide

Updating your kitchen flooring can be a transformative project, and laminate flooring is an affordable and stylish choice. However, installing laminate flooring around kitchen cabinets can seem daunting. Fear not! With a little preparation and patience, you can achieve a professional-looking finish.

Before you begin, gather the necessary tools and materials:

  • Laminate flooring
  • Underlayment (optional)
  • Trim molding
  • Miter saw or hand saw
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Hammer
  • Nail gun (optional)
  • Caulk and caulk gun
  • Pry bar
  • Spacer blocks

Preparing the Area

1. Remove any existing flooring, including baseboards and cabinet toe kicks.

2. Clean the subfloor thoroughly and inspect it for any unevenness or damage. Repair any issues before proceeding.

Installing the Underlayment (Optional)

3. If desired, install an underlayment to provide a cushion and sound barrier. Cut the underlayment to fit the area and lay it down, overlapping the seams.

Laying the Laminate Flooring

4. Measure and trim planks to fit around cabinets and other obstacles. Use a spacer block against the wall to maintain a consistent gap.

5. Begin laying the flooring in a corner, working towards the opposite end of the room. Click the planks together according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Trimming Around Cabinets

6. To trim around cabinets, measure and mark the plank at the back of the cabinet. Cut the plank using a miter saw or hand saw.

7. Insert the trimmed plank into the space behind the cabinet, ensuring that it fits snugly against the cabinet.

Installing Trim Molding

8. Measure and cut trim molding to fit around the edges of the flooring and base of the cabinets. Use a miter saw to create angled cuts at the corners.

9. Secure the molding to the floor and cabinets using nails or a nail gun. Fill any gaps with caulk.

Finishing Touches

10. Reinstall the baseboards and cabinet toe kicks. Caulk any gaps between the flooring and cabinets.

11. Clean the floor and enjoy your newly installed laminate flooring!

Tips for a Professional Finish

  • Use a level to ensure that the flooring is flat and even.
  • Stagger the joints of the planks for a more natural look.
  • Take your time and measure carefully to avoid mistakes.
  • Use a pry bar to gently lift the planks into place if needed.
  • Seal the gaps between the flooring and cabinets with caulk to prevent water damage.
