How to Install Crown Molding on Existing Kitchen Cabinets

Crown molding adds an elegant finishing touch to kitchen cabinets, creating a more polished and sophisticated look. Installing crown molding may seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and materials, it's a project that can be completed in several hours.

Materials You'll Need:

- Crown molding (quantity depends on cabinet length) - Miter saw or miter box - Brad nailer or hammer and nails - Measuring tape - Pencil - Wood filler - Caulk gun and caulk - Sandpaper

Step 1: Measure and Cut the Crown Molding

Measure the length of the cabinets where you'll be installing the crown molding. Mark these measurements onto the molding and cut it to size using a miter saw for precise angles. For the corners, measure and cut 45-degree miter cuts on the ends of the molding.

Step 2: Dry Fit and Adjust

Place the crown molding on top of the cabinets to ensure a proper fit. Make any necessary adjustments to the cuts to ensure that the pieces align seamlessly. Use a pencil to mark the position of the nail holes on the molding.

Step 3: Pre-Drill the Holes

Using a nail or drill, pre-drill small holes at the marked locations. This will prevent the wood from splitting when you nail in the molding.

Step 4: Secure the Crown Molding

Apply a small amount of wood glue to the back of the molding. Carefully position the molding on top of the cabinets and secure it with brad nails or hammer and nails. Countersink the nails slightly below the surface of the molding using a nail set or a hammer.

Step 5: Fill Nail Holes and Caulk

Cover the nail holes with wood filler and allow it to dry. Once dry, sand the filled areas smooth. Apply a thin bead of caulk along the seams where the molding meets the cabinets and the ceiling. Smooth the caulk with a damp finger to create a clean and seamless finish.

Step 6: Paint or Stain

If desired, paint or stain the crown molding to match the cabinets or the existing trim. Allow the paint or stain to dry completely before using the cabinets.

Tips:

- Use a sharp blade on your miter saw for clean, precise cuts. - Practice cutting and fitting the molding on scrap pieces before working on the actual cabinets. - Clamp the molding in place before nailing to prevent it from moving. - Use a finishing tool or a small block to secure the molding without damaging it. - If you encounter gaps between the molding and the cabinets, use wood shims to fill the spaces.
