How To Hang Kitchen Wall Cabinets On Plaster

Installing kitchen wall cabinets on plaster can be a challenging task, but it's certainly doable with the right preparation and techniques. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you through the process.

Materials You'll Need

  • Wall cabinets
  • Screws (2 1/2 inches long, #8 or #9)
  • Drill with drill bits
  • Stud finder
  • Level
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Drywall anchors (optional)

Step 1: Prep the Wall

Start by clearing the wall of any obstacles, such as old cabinets or light fixtures. Clean the wall and allow it to dry completely. Assess the condition of the plaster. If there are any cracks or holes, repair them with plaster patch or spackling paste.

Step 2: Locate the Studs

Using a stud finder, locate the wall studs where you'll be hanging the cabinets. These are the strongest points on the wall and provide the most secure support for your cabinets. Mark the center point of each stud with a pencil.

Step 3: Measure and Mark

Determine the height you want to hang the cabinets. Use a level to draw a horizontal line on the wall at this height. Measure and mark the distance between the center points of the studs you identified earlier. This will indicate where the cabinet vertical lines will go.

Step 4: Install the Cabinet Rails

Cut two wood rails to the length of your cabinets. Position the rails evenly on the wall, aligning them with the horizontal and vertical lines you marked. Use a drill to drive screws through the rails into the studs. Make sure the rails are level and securely fastened.

Step 5: Hang the Cabinets

Carefully lift each cabinet into place and align it with the cabinet rails. Use a level to check that the cabinet is level both horizontally and vertically. Drive screws through the cabinet mounting brackets into the cabinet rails. Tighten the screws until the cabinet is held firmly in place.

Step 6: Secure to the Wall (Optional)

For added stability, especially if your plaster wall is not in perfect condition, consider securing the cabinets directly to the wall with drywall anchors. Drill pilot holes through the backs of the cabinets and insert the anchors. Drive screws through the anchors into the wall.

Step 7: Finish Up

Check that all cabinets are securely hung and level. If necessary, adjust the mounting brackets to ensure proper alignment. Attach cabinet doors and hardware to complete the installation.
