How to Get Paint Off Kitchen Cabinet Hinges

Painting kitchen cabinets is a great way to update the look of your kitchen without breaking the bank. However, if you're not careful, you can end up with paint on your cabinet hinges, which can make them difficult to open and close. If this happens, don't worry! There are a few simple steps you can take to remove the paint and get your hinges working properly again.

1. Gather Your Supplies

Before you start, you'll need to gather a few supplies:

  • A soft cloth or sponge
  • Denatured alcohol or mineral spirits
  • A cotton swab or toothpick
  • A pair of pliers

2. Remove the Hinges

Once you have your supplies, you can start by removing the hinges from the cabinets. To do this, simply use a pair of pliers to unscrew the screws that are holding the hinges in place. Be careful not to overtighten the screws, as this can damage the hinges.

3. Clean the Hinges

Once the hinges are removed, you can start cleaning them. To do this, simply dip a soft cloth or sponge in denatured alcohol or mineral spirits and wipe down the hinges. Be sure to get into all the nooks and crannies, and don't be afraid to use a little elbow grease.

4. Remove Stubborn Paint

If there is any stubborn paint that won't come off with denatured alcohol or mineral spirits, you can try using a cotton swab or toothpick dipped in paint thinner. Be careful not to use too much paint thinner, as this can damage the hinges.

5. Reinstall the Hinges

Once the hinges are clean, you can reinstall them on the cabinets. To do this, simply line up the hinges with the holes in the cabinets and screw them back into place. Be sure to tighten the screws securely, but don't overtighten them.

6. Test the Hinges

Once the hinges are reinstalled, test them to make sure they are working properly. Open and close the cabinet doors a few times to make sure that the hinges are moving smoothly and that there is no paint residue. If there is any paint residue, simply repeat the cleaning process until all of the paint has been removed.
