How to Fix Broken Kitchen Cabinet Hinges

Kitchen cabinet hinges are essential for the smooth and efficient operation of your cabinets. When they become broken, it can be a major inconvenience. Fortunately, fixing broken kitchen cabinet hinges is a relatively simple task that can be completed with a few basic tools.

The first step is to identify what type of hinge you have. There are two main types of hinges used in kitchen cabinets: full overlay and half overlay. Full overlay hinges are mounted on the inside of the cabinet door, while half overlay hinges are mounted on the outside of the door. Once you have identified the type of hinge you have, you can begin the repair.

Steps to Fix Broken Kitchen Cabinet Hinges

  1. Remove the cabinet door. Open the cabinet door and use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws that hold it in place. Gently lift the door up and off of the cabinet frame.
  2. Locate the broken hinge. Once the door is removed, you will be able to see the hinges. Inspect the hinges for any cracks or breaks. If you find a broken hinge, you will need to replace it.
  3. Replace the broken hinge. If the hinge is broken, you will need to remove it and replace it with a new one. To remove the hinge, use a flat head screwdriver to pry the hinge away from the cabinet frame. Once the hinge is removed, you can insert the new hinge into the hole. Use a hammer and nail set to secure the new hinge in place.
  4. Reattach the cabinet door. Once the new hinge is installed, you can reattach the cabinet door. To do this, simply lift the door up and into place. Align the door with the cabinet frame and use a Phillips head screwdriver to secure the screws.

If the hinge is not broken, but is simply loose, you can tighten it by using a screwdriver to turn the screws that hold it in place. You may also need to use a hammer and nail set to drive the screws all the way into the wood.

If the hinge is stripped, you can repair it by using wooden dowels. To do this, drill a hole into the hinge and insert a wooden dowel. The dowel will help to fill the stripped hole and make the hinge more secure.
