DIY Barn Style Kitchen Cabinets: A Guide to Creating a Rustic Farmhouse Look

Barn style kitchen cabinets are a popular choice for homeowners looking to create a rustic farmhouse look in their kitchens. They are characterized by their simple, clean lines and often feature reclaimed wood or distressed finishes. While barn style cabinets can be purchased pre-made, they can also be relatively easy to build yourself with a little bit of woodworking experience.

Materials You'll Need

  • 1x12 pine boards
  • 1x4 pine boards
  • 2x4 pine boards
  • 3/4-inch plywood
  • Wood glue
  • Nails
  • Screws
  • Cabinet hardware

Instructions

1. Cut the 1x12 pine boards to the desired length for the cabinet sides. For a standard-sized cabinet, the sides should be 36 inches tall and 12 inches deep.

2. Cut the 1x4 pine boards to the desired length for the cabinet front and back. The front and back should be 24 inches tall and 12 inches deep.

3. Assemble the cabinet sides by gluing and nailing the 1x12 pine boards together. Make sure the boards are flush with each other at the top and bottom.

4. Attach the 1x4 pine boards to the cabinet sides to form the front and back of the cabinet. Again, make sure the boards are flush with each other at the top and bottom.

5. Cut the 2x4 pine boards to the desired length for the cabinet shelves. For a standard-sized cabinet, the shelves should be 24 inches wide and 12 inches deep.

6. Attach the 2x4 pine boards to the cabinet sides using wood screws. Make sure the shelves are level and evenly spaced.

7. Cut the 3/4-inch plywood to the desired size for the cabinet door. The door should be 24 inches tall and 12 inches wide.

8. Attach the plywood door to the cabinet using cabinet hardware. Make sure the door is aligned with the cabinet opening.

9. Repeat steps 1-8 to build additional cabinets as needed.

Tips

  • If you are using reclaimed wood, make sure to clean it thoroughly before building your cabinets.
  • You can distress the cabinets by sanding them with a coarse-grit sandpaper.
  • To give the cabinets a more rustic look, you can add wrought iron hardware.
  • Barn style cabinets can be painted or stained to match your kitchen décor.

With a little bit of effort, you can build beautiful and durable barn style kitchen cabinets that will add a touch of rustic charm to your home.
